Ou⸸lastII starts with this warning (or advertisement) of what you will find and it certainly does deliver. [Here there be spoilers]
I started playing the game and it didn’t take too long before I came across something horrible and I stopped to take a screenshot of it.
Then shortly after that something else came along that was horrible and I took a screenshot of that too. Soon I found myself bogged down in the game because everything is horrible.
If you are unfamiliar with Ou⸸lastII you play as Blake Langermann, the husband/cameraman of an investigative reporter Lynn Langermann. You are looking into the mysterious death of a Jane Doe when your helicopter crashes in the deserts of northern Arizona. Blake is separated from Lynn during the crash and she is captured by the local cult known as Temple Gate. It’s run by a guy name Sullivan Knoth who founded the cult back in the early 70s as, I assume, a way to get laid.
Lately, though, things have taken a turn for the depraved as the Murkoff Corporation, the evil corporation behind the horrors of the first Outlast, set up mind altering radio towers to test it’s effects upon the local population.
These magical brain rays convince the head wingnut that the any child could potentially be the Antichrist and so has all of the cult’s children murdered along with any pregnant women. This causes as certain amount of consternation within the ranks and so the loyal cult members brutally kill and mutilate those who think infanticide might be a bad idea.
Now, one sadistic, insane cult seems like plenty but in Ou⸸lastII our cup runneth over and we get two sadistic, insane cults.
While the make-be-crazy waves coming from the towers makes King Baby Killer want to stop the Antichrist from being born, it makes his second in command, Val, want to ensure the birth of said Antichrist because death and destruction should be a goal and not just a pass time.
All of this combines to create one of the darkest (both figuratively and literally) video games that I have ever played and I’ve just scratched the surface here.
There’s sexual assault and rape. People tortured to death on the rack and wheel and prisoners’ in their own excrement.
There’s even a colony of tertiary syphilitics that have been cast out of the cult who believe that Blake is their long awaited messiah that, if they crucify, bury and then cannibalize, will free them from their afflictions.
Ou⸸lastII is a wild ride into the heart of darkness. You spend the whole game, alone, in the dark, chased by crazed cultists out for your blood and surrounded by horrific imagery.
